Abstract

Although this exposition covers the topics discussed in the series of lectures presented at the Summer School on Infrared Astronomy, their order has been changed. This is largely a result of the experience gained during the course. A number of results not presented in Erice have been included for completeness because there was inadequate time to do so during the course of lectures. I have tried to preserve the character of the lectures by limiting the mathematical detail and using physical or heuristic arguments to derive some of the formulae.
