Minor Head Trauma: An Overview

  • Chapter
Minor Head Trauma

Abstract

It is estimated that in the United States between 400,000 and 500,000 individuals are hospitalized every year for head trauma (1,2). Hospitalization for minor head injury alone occurs with an incidence of 131 cases for every 100,000 people in the population and accounts for about 60% to 82% of all admissions for head trauma (3). The vast numbers of such patients have led some to label head injury “the silent epidemic” (4). In economic terms, the cost is enormous, estimated to be more than $3.9 billion per year (5). The noneconomic cost to society is even greater, since these injuries often result in significant social and vocational morbidity and increased dependency on family members.
