Abstract
The field of image processing offers an unusually fertile playground for applied mathematicians, where the distance between an abstract mathematical idea and an or even a product may be small. This explains both the presence of so many mathematicians in this field, and the fact that research in it became so mathematically oriented in the past two decades. The activity on sparse and redundant representation modeling is just one manifestation of both these trends.
