This article is based on the thesis of Nicole van Nes, “Replacement of Durables; Influencing product lifetime through product design”, Erasmus University Rotterdam, 2003. The authors like to thank Prof. Ab Stevels for his input.

Nicole van Nes is graduated as an Industrial Designer and preformed a PhD research on influencing product lifetime by product design (joint project of Philips, Delft University of Technology and Erasmus University Rotterdam (the Netherlands)). The multidisciplinary research includes environmental effects, consumer behaviour and product development. van Nes has worked for a couple of years as a market researcher and currently she is working at the Scientific Research Institute for Road Safety (SWOV). Her main research interest lies in influencing consumer behaviour into the societal desired direction.

Jacqueline Cramer is professor in sustainable entrepreneurship at the University of Utrecht (previously at the Erasmus University Rotterdam) and director of Cramer Environmental Consultancy. She is a member of various advisory bodies, for instance crown member of the Dutch Social and Economic Council, the Dutch World Wildlife Fund and member of the Supervisory Board of Shell Netherlands ad ASN Bank funds.
