Abstract

Aim: Retrospectively the recurrence and complication rate, long-term results and patient's satisfaction after out-patient excision (in local anesthesia) of a perianal thrombosis or isolated thrombosed hemorrhoid were studied.

Patients and Method: From 1995 untill 1999 340 patients were operated. At least 9 months after the operation each patient received a questionnaire regarding operations for recurrence, residual complaints, patient's satisfaction with anesthesia and treatment of the wound.

Results: 20 patients developed a recurrence (5.9%), three postoperative bleeding (0.9%), seven an abscess or fistula (2.1%). The recurrence rate of the questionnaires was 86%; the average time of follow-up 16.3 months. 67% of the patients had no complaints. 81% would not object to have the operation again in local anesthesia, 5% rather not, and 13% were indecisive.

Conclusion: The results show, that out-patient excision (in local anesthesia) of a perianal thrombosis or isolated thrombosed hemorrhoid can be performed with a low recurrence and complication rate. Long-term follow-up shows that patient's acceptance and satisfaction are high.
