Abstract

This paper describes the current status of comprehensive planning for the city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A description of the origins and recent rapid growth of the city provide context for an extended discussion of the need for planned intervention into the city's urban development process. An overview of the special characteristics of Islamic urban form and important features of recent plans for Arab Islamic cities is also included. The balance of the paper deals with an analysis of the city's current demographic and physical conditions and how these have been affected by policies contained in the current Master Plan.
