A skull ofCyamodus kuhnschnyderi Nosotti &Pinna 1993, from the Muschelkalk of wasselonne (Alsace, France)

Kurzfassung

Ein unvollständiger Schädel eines Placodontiers aus dem Oberen Muschelkalk (mo3,praenodosus bis unterenodosus Zone) von Wasselonne (Elsass, Frankreich) wird beschrieben und als ein drittes Exemplar vonCyamodus kuhnschnyderi bestimmt. Die Bezahnung aller der GattungCyamodus zugeordneter Arten wird diskutiert, und individuelle Variationen der Zahnformel werden bestimmt. Im Gegensatz zum Typusmaterial hat das dritte Exemplar vonCyamodus kuhnschnyderi zwei Paare von Praemaxillarzähnen. Dies führt zu Inkongruenz im früher beschriebenen stratophenetischen Trend der Zahnreduktion innerhalb der GattungCyamodus.

Abstract

A partial skull from the upper Muschelkalk (mo3,praenodosus to lowernodosus Zone) of Wasselonne (Alsace, France) is described and identified as third specimen ofCyamodus kuhnschnyderi. The dentition of all species currently included in the genusCyamodus is discussed, and instances of individual variation are identified. In contrast to the type material, the new specimen ofCyamodus kuhnschnyderi has two pairs of premaxillary teeth, and thus adds incongruence to the stratophenetic trend of dental reduction previously identified within the genusCyamodus.
