Additional information

This article is based on notes prepaired for an invited lecture entitled “Beyond the False Antinomies of Social Science,” delivered at the Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago in April 1987. Since these notes were originally prepared for oral presentation with the intention of provoking discussion rather than for publication, certain passages have been omitted others added to elaborate briefly on remarks that could only be sketched out in the public presentation. The translation and bibliographic notes are by Loic J. D. Wacquant.
