Abstract
The term “Nutraceutical” refers to a group of substances which are either food or parts of food that provide medical or health benefits. The period of emergence of nutrients as medicines in the pharmaceutical world is of great importance and that draws attention of scientists and researchers towards the substantial benefits of nutraceuticals. During the last century, the interest towards plant-derived products decreased among human community as a result of the shift towards “fast foods.” As the changed lifestyle resulted in various noncommunicable diseases and health complications, now the mankind is searching for plants or plant-derived products for healthy life, which is evident from the growth of nutraceutical market as a million-dollar industry at a global level. Plants produce enormous variety of phytochemicals called secondary metabolites which are valuable source of pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. The secondary metabolites are species specific or tribe specific and are endowed with healing potential and other benefits. This chapter intends to provide an account of various plant-derived secondary metabolites used as nutraceuticals for the betterment of human life.
