Success in Biological Control of Soil-dwelling Insects by Pathogens and Nematodes

  • Chapter
Biological Control: Measures of Success

Abstract

Soil-dwelling insect pests pose special problems in pest management. They are hidden in the soil and hard to detect until the sudden appearance of damage creates the demand for rapid, curative treatment. The problem then becomes one of applying control measures to pests that are concealed and protected in the soil matrix below the ground surface. Given the difficulty of predicting damage by these pests, and the problem of controlling them following awareness of their presence, farmers have tended to use prophylactic chemicals when possible to prevent damage. This ‘insect proofing’ of the soil, however, has led to problems of residues, pest resurgence, insecticide resistance and failure of economic control, opening up both a need and an opportunity for the use of entomopathogenic microbes in the management of soil-dwelling insect pests.
