Abstract
87 species of Plecoptera from 9 families were collected from 218 sites, between 75 and 1860 m above sea level, in a Japanese river system near Tokyo. Many Perlinae species (e.g. Oyamia lugubris) and some Acroneuriinae (Perlidae) and Perlodidae species occur mostly in the lower altitudinal range below 500 m, whereas many Perlodidae (e.g. Sopkalia yamadae) and some Peltoperlidae and Acroneuriinae species occur abundantly above 500 m. Megarcys ochracea (Perlodidae) and Scopura sp. (Scopuridae) are restricted to the higher range above 1000 m. Other species were found in almost all ranges (e.g. Pseudo-megarcys japonica, Perlodidae), or were collected only occasionally. Some downstream replacement occurred in closely allied pairs of species (e.g. Oyamia lugubris and O. seminigra) mostly along watercourses in the lower range of altitude. The cold water from an artificial reservoir lowered the altitudinal range of Calineuria stigmatica.
