Part of the book series: The Families and Genera of Vascular Plants ((FAMILIES GENERA,volume 2))

Abstract

Trees or shrubs, mostly evergreen. Leaves alternate to opposite or apparently whorled, simple, entire, often coriaceous. Stipules absent. Indument consisting of simple, unicellular hairs, or none. Inflorescences mostly determinate, mostly axillary, thyrsopaniculate to (di-)botryoid or pseudo-umbellate, rarely capitellate or reduced to a single flower, rarely as a whole enveloped in large bracts before anthesis, more frequently with several umbellate groups of flowers, each surrounded by an involucre of bracts, or inflorescences without involucra. Flowers small, (1−) 2–8(−20) mm diameter, usually greenish, yellowish, or white, rarely reddish, actinomorphic, bisexual or unisexual, mostly trimerous. Tepals in two whorls, mostly equal. Stamens usually in four whorls, of which the innermost is sterile or often lacking; sometimes also one or two of the other three whorls sterile or absent; usually the third whorl with a pair of glands at the base. Anthers two- or four-locular, opening by valves, mostly from base to apex, in the two outer whorls mostly introrse, in the third whorl introrse to extrorse.
