Abstract
Valery M. Baev was born in Kamchatka in the USSR in 1948. He received his diploma in physics from the Moscow Physico-Technical Institute in 1972, and Ph.D. from the Lebedev Physical Institute in 1980. Since 1972, he has been a research fellow of the Lebedev Institute in Moscow. The main subject of his research has been intracavity laser spectroscopy, a field in which Arthur Schawlow published one of the pioneering papers in 1972, with Peter Toschek and Theodor Hansch as co-authors. Dr. Baev has visited Prof. Toschek’s laboratory to collaborate on intra-cavity laser spectroscopy experiments, both at Heidelberg in 1979–1981 and at Hamburg in 1985–1987, most recently as an Alexander von Humbolt fellow.
