1987 YA. Discovered 1987 Dec. 18 by M. Koishikawa at Sendai.
Named for the capital of Vietnam. The discoverer visited the city in 1997 with Yoshihide Kozai {see planet (3040)} to help Vietnamese astronomers install a 0.40-m Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with a CCD camera and a 0.10-m refractor. The equipment, installed at the National Pedagogical University, was obtained using funds from the Sumitomo Foundations, Japan, with the hope that astronomical research in Vietnam will thereby be promoted.
