Auf Grundlage des “Scientific Discovery as Dual Search”- Modells (SDDS) wurde ein Test zur Messung von Kompetenzen beim Experimentieren entwickelt, um zu überprüfen, ob sich die drei Dimensionen des Experimentierens anhand von Multiple-Choice-Aufgaben in reliable Skalen überführen lassen. Da dies mit zufriedenstellender Reliabilität gelang, wurde die Binnenstruktur des Konstrukts „Experimentieren als Problemlösen“ untersucht. Dies geschah faktorenanalytisch und korrelationsstatistisch sowie mit multivariaten Methoden. Die konfirmatorische faktorenanalytische Überprüfung des Testdesigns lieferte Hinweise auf die Existenz zweier Dimensionen des eingesetzten Tests. Zwischen den Dimensionen wurden mittlere bis hohe Interkorrelationen ermittelt, wobei die erwarteten Ähnlichkeiten zwischen denjenigen Dimensionen bestätigt wurden, welche stärker vom bereichsspezifischen inhaltlichen Vorwissen bestimmt werden, ebenso wie die Unterschiede dieser Dimensionen zur Dimension „Testen von Hypothesen“, die stärker vom methodischen Wissen über Ziele und Vorgehensweisen beim Experimentieren bestimmt wird. Die ermittelten Korrelationen zwischen dem bereichsspezifischen Vorwissen und den Dimensionen des Experimentierens liegen auf einem wesentlich geringeren Niveau als die Interkorrelationskoeffizienten.
