Abstract
It is a curious fact that beer has facilitated the emergence of some of the key figures in the history of astronomy. For example, in a previous chapter, we have already covered the saga of Johannes Hevelius of Danzig in the late seventeenth century, whose fortune came through brewing. And it was also true of William Lassell (born June 18, 1799), the son of a timber merchant hailing from Moor Lane in Bolton, Lancashire, in England (Fig. 10.1).
