Definition
The botryoid odontogenic cyst is a multicystic variant of the lateral periodontal cyst. The term botryoid was applied because the original cases described by Weathers and Waldron resembled a small cluster of grapes on gross examination. Kaugars proposed the following three diagnostic criteria for a botryoid odontogenic cyst: (1) histologic features similar to those of the lateral periodontal cyst and demonstration of multiple cystic areas within the lesion, (2) the cyst may have a multilocular radiolucent radiographic appearance, and (3) no evidence of an inflammatory origin from either pulpal or periodontal elements.
Clinical Features
Incidence
Pooled data from several reported series show that the botryoid variant comprises nearly 15 % of all lateral periodontal cysts. However, because the lateral periodontal cyst represents only 0.4–1.2 % of all odontogenic cysts, the botryoid variant must be considered a distinctly uncommon lesion.
