Abstract

In the Oligocene and Miocene, eutypomyids are intermediate to large size rodents. The primitive Wasatchian to Duchesnean species are small. No cranial material is known for species earlier than the Chadronian. The skull is low with a markedly elongate rostrum which is manifest in elongated nasal and premaxillary bones and upper diastema (Fig. 12.1). The neurocranium is also elongated. The skull is fully sciuromorphous (not known in pre-Chadronian species). The infraorbital foramen is relatively low on the rostrum as in sciurids. There is a pronounced process ventral to the infraorbital foramen for the attachment of the masseter superficialis. The incisive foramina are short.
