Endophytes as Antagonists of Plant Pests

Abstract

Endophytic bacteria and fungi are common inhabitants of aerial plant tissues. Considerable information has come to light over the past ten years regarding the effects of endophytic microorganisms on their host plants and on other organisms interacting with host plants. Unlike typical plant pathogens, endophytes cause host plants little harm and often provide measurable benefits. Two broad classes of benefit have been documented. Endophyte-induced changes in plant physiology leading to enhanced growth and abiotic stress resistance are known from infected graminoids (Clay, 1987b; West et al., 1988; Arachevaleta et al., 1989). A second major benefit accruing to endophyte-infected plants is enhanced resistance to plant pests such as insects, seed predators, plant pathogens, and nematodes (Clay et al., 1985b; Latch et al., 1985; Bacon et al., 1986a; Cheplick and Clay, 1988; West et al., 1988; Ford and Kirkpatrick, 1989). If the cost of supporting endophytes is less than the damage sustained by endophyte-free plants, natural selection should favor plants with characteristics that enhance infection by and persistence of endophytes. The purpose of this paper is to consider how endophyte infection influences interactions between plants and other species.
