Abstract
The phenomena of language variation and change raise an important problem which is often neglected in sociolinguistics. In Labovian sociolinguistics the problem is known as the evaluation problem (Labov 1972: 162). Social evaluations of language variants and varieties are also referred to as language attitudes. Especially when it comes to explanations, the need to study the social evaluations or attitudes which accompany variation and change becomes pressing.
