Perceptions of an unjust world are associated with a lack of trust in others (Bègue, 2013) and a cynical worldview (Crandall & Cohen, 1994). Thus, when the social environment is perceived as unjust and others are perceived as untrustworthy, focusing on self-interest is justified and likely even beneficial, because it potentially protects against exploitative behaviors of others.
