Place of articulation and first formant transition pattern both affect perception of voicing in English

Abstract

Voice onset time (VOT) and first-formant (F1) transition characteristics are both important phonetic cues for voicing categorization of pretonic stops in English. These cues also covary with place of articulation in production, such that bilabials are produced with shorter VOT values, and velars are produced with longer VOT values. This study investigated the effects of place of articulation and F1transition pattern on voicing categorization of VOT continua. Listeners categorized for voicing and place of articulation the stop consonant in VCV and CV stimuli for which the variables F1transition pattern, place of articulation (bilabial, alveolar, and velar), and VOT were fully crossed. A logistic regression analysis shows that bilabial and alveolar stimuli were more likely than velar stimuli to be classified as voiceless, largely independent of F1transition pattern. Increasing F1onset frequency and shortening transition duration also made voiceless judgments more likely. The magnitude of theF1 transition effects was considerably larger than the place of articulation effect. The results are inconsistent with models of consonant classification in which acoustic–phonetic cues for place of articulation are not involved in the perception of the voicing contrast. However, the observed perceptual interaction between place of articulation and voicing may be consistent with either a feature- or segment-based model of consonant classification.

      Lower f0 within the vowel and particularly at its end similarly increases listeners’ perception that a following stop is voiced (Gruenenfelder & Pisoni, 1980; Kohler, 1985), as does lower F1 (Summers, 1988; Benkí, 2001). Longer transitions from the vowel to the consonant closure also result in more identifications of coda consonants as voiced (Benkí, 2001; Stevens & Klatt, 1974). Studies examining possible perceptual sources of the voicing effect tend to focus on how characteristics of the coda influence perception of the vowel.

      For statistical assessment, the current study analyzed participants’ choice proportions using binary logistic regression, which allowed us to create models predicting participants’ classification of items as a function of VOT and F0, and to predict whether there were differences in the means or slopes of these regression models between Dialect groups. We adopted a procedure for repeated-measures regression analysis based on Lorch and Myers (1990, see also Benki, 2001). This procedure involves first pooling the trials from all subjects together into a single analysis to determine which predictors to include in the regression model (referred to as the pooled model), and then using those predictors to fit a regression model to each subject.

      Identification functions were calculated as the proportion of noun responses to all seven stimuli sharing a given vowel quality value and to all seven stimuli sharing a given f0 value. Logistic regression has been used to rank the relative importance of relevant acoustic cues in speech perception studies (Benki, 2001; Clayards, Aslin, Tanenhaus, & Jacobs, 2007; Mayo & Turk, 2004; Morrison, 2005). According to Pampel (2000), the Wald statistics is used to test the significance of the individual coefficient of each independent variable, which is calculated as the squared ratio of the unstandardized coefficient to its standard error, following a chi-square distribution.
