The fact that nanogels containing fibronectin-derived peptides (RGDS and PHSRN) resulted in low cell densities similar to the nanogel without peptides is suggestive for LEC transdifferentiation and indicates that nanogels with combinations with fibronectin-derived peptides are not beneficial in CO prevention.

Hyaluronan (HA), a non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan polymer and a major component of the ECM (Meyer and Palmer, 1934), undergoes dynamic regulation during inflammation (Jiang et al., 2007, 2011; Katoh et al., 2007; Laurent and Fraser, 1992; Lennon and Singleton, 2011; Toole, 2000; Ghosh et al., 2014b) and is synthesized by a wide variety of cell types, including stromal cells (Yue et al., 1978), fibroblasts (Kitchen and Cysyk, 1995; Acharya et al., 2008; Vistejnova et al., 2014), epithelial cells (Toshida et al., 2012), and smooth muscle cells (Deudon et al., 1992).

The lens capsule

It also provides the anchor point for the basal surfaces of epithelial and fiber cells, which provides necessary signals for proper lens cell proliferation, migration and differentiation (Bassnett et al., 1999; Blakely et al., 2000; Lu et al., 2008; Oharazawa et al., 1999). Lens cells contain membrane bound integrins capable of binding collagen IV, laminin, fibronectin, and perlecan within the lens capsule through the RGD (Arg-Gly-Asp) amino acid sequence and various other epitopes (Fig. 3) (see Menko, 2009) (Menko et al., 1998; Pedchenko et al., 2004).
