2020, Experimental Eye ResearchCitation Excerpt :Poorly differentiated epithelium, characterized by the lack of keratin 3 expression, occurred when the epithelium was immersed in the media compared to maintenance at an air-liquid interface. Moreover, complete epithelial cell differentiation and formation of the epithelial basement membrane was dependent on the presence of the endothelial layer, suggesting that factors secreted by the endothelium may promote maturation of the epithelial barrier (Zieske et al., 1994). The development of this model highlighted the importance of co-culture approaches in tissue-engineered models of the cornea, showing the dependence of the corneal cell types in basement membrane formation.
