Vitamin D modulates airway smooth muscle function in COPD
2012, Current Opinion in PharmacologyCitation Excerpt :Intracellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cellular adhesion molecule (VCAM) have been detected in ASM after cytokine stimulation, and both have been implicated in airway inflammation [25–27]. Studies in human umbilical vein epithelial cells show that Vit D decreases TNF-α induced VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 expression, and in promyeloleukemic HL-60 cells Vit D decreases expression of the VCAM receptor and cellular adhesion [28]. In dendritic cells, Vit D inhibits TLR-4 induced activation of antigen presenting cells [29].
