Flanking female guides: collective decision making in long-finned pilot whales
2023, Animal BehaviourCollective movement decision-making in primates in crop-raiding contexts
2022, Behavioural ProcessesCitation Excerpt :Unshared decision-making invokes the concept of a single leader, typically a socially dominant individual, who consistently makes all the decisions regarding group movement, whereas shared decision-making involves leadership that is more variable or distributed among different group members who may initiate group movements on different occasions (Leca et al., 2003; Sueur and Petit, 2008a; Pyritz et al., 2011). The form of consensus decision-making for collective movements differs amongst primate species, and it has been suggested that this variance is related to the social structure and dominance styles of the species (Sueur and Petit, 2008a; Leca et al., 2003). Two concepts are central to our understanding of collective movement decision-making; the first concerns the role of leadership as a driver for collective behavior and the second relates to the criteria used by joiners to participate in collective movements.
Group behaviours and individual spatial sorting before departure predict the dynamics of collective movements in horses
2021, Animal BehaviourCitation Excerpt :Indeed, the cohesion of the group, that is, dispersion and density at the front, was the only factor that had a significant impact on the duration of the joining process. Our results confirmed those of previous studies on dispersion and recruitment in primates (Leca et al., 2003; Sperber et al., 2019; Sueur & Petit, 2008) and birds (Ramseyer et al., 2008) but partially matched those in heifers and ewes (Ramseyer, Boissy, et al., 2009; Ramseyer, Thierry, et al., 2009). In these latter studies, the authors found an effect not only of dispersion but also of orientation and activity at different times.
