본고는 유정 체언과 주로 결합하는 조사 ‘에게’가 예외적으로 무정 체언과 결합하는 현상을 살펴보고, 조사 ‘에게’가 무정 체언과 결합이 가능한 현상의 원인을 고찰하였다. 조사 ‘에게’가 무정 체언과 결합하는 원인은 크게 ‘환유’와 ‘은유’라는 두 가지 원인 때문인 것으로 분석되었다. ‘환유’로 분석되는 경우는 다시 두 가지 경우로 나눌 수 있었는데, 하나는 무정물을 통해 인접한 유정물을 지칭하는 경우이고 다른 하나는 무정물인 단체명사를 통해 그에 속한 인간 구성원이 인식되는 경우이다. 이러한 환유적 표현을 통하여 무정 체언과 ‘에게’가 결합 가능한 것으로 보인다. 한편 ‘은유’로 분석되는 경우도 다시 두 가지 경우로 나눌 수 있었는데, 하나는 무정물을 유정물로 의인화하여 인식하는 경우이고 다른 하나는 인간명사보다 유정성의 위계가 상대적으로 낮은 동물명사가 문장에서 행위주로 해석되는 경우이다. 이러한 은유의 표현 기제가 작용하여 무정 체언 또는 유정성의 위계가 낮은 체언에 ‘에게’가 결합되는 것으로 보인다. ‘에게’와 무정 체언이 예외적으로 결합하는 양상과 원인을 살펴본 본 논의는 전통적인 문법 기술을 정교화하였다는 점에서 의미가 있으며 국어 교육뿐 아니라 한국어 교육에서 조사 사용에 관한 교수 시 활용 가능하다는 점에서 의미가 있다.

This paper is aimed at examining a phenomenon that the postpositional particle ege (에게) ― which is mainly combined with animate nouns ― is exceptionally combined with inanimate nouns and at figuring out the reasons why the postpositional particle ege can be combined with inanimate nouns. It was analyzed that the reason why the postpositional particle ege is combined with inanimate nouns is largely attributed to two mechanisms: ‘metonymy’ and ‘metaphor’. The case of analyzing ‘metonymy’ could be divided into two cases: One is the case of referring to an adjacent animate noun through an inanimate noun, and the other is the case in which human members belonging to the group noun, which are the inanimate noun, are recognized. Through this metonymic expression, it seems that inanimate nouns and the postpositional particle ege can be combined. On the other hand, the case analyzed as a ‘metaphor’ could be divided into two conditions. One is a case that an inanimate noun is personified and recognized as an animate noun, and the other case is that an animal noun in a relatively l ower hierarchy of an imacy than a human noun is in terpreted as an agent in a sentence. It seems that the expression mechanism of this metaphor works, and the postpositional particle ege is combined with inanimate nouns or animal nouns.
