본 연구는 고등학교에서 선택과목의 하나로 가르치고 있는 ‘세계지리’ 교과목에 대한 비판적 고찰과 그에 대한 대안을 모색한 것이다. 우리나라 고등학교 선택과목명 ‘한국지리’와 ‘세계지리’는 과연 세계화와 지역화라는 사회적 적실성에 부응하고 현대 지리학이 제공하는 새로운 지리적 지식을 담는 그릇으로 타당한지에 대한 의문을 제기한다. 지리교육의 모학문인 지리학은 관계적 전환을 통해 다중스케일적 접근과 관계적 사고를 강조하고 있음에도 불구하고, 중등 지리교육은 여전히 한국지리와 세계지리로 양분된 교과목 체제를 가지고 있어서 이를 반영하는데 큰 걸림돌이 되고 있다. 따라서 다양한 스케일이 함께 다루어질 수 있는 비스케일적 교과목명의 도입을 전향적으로 검토할 필요가 있음을 강조한다. 비스케일적 교과목명 하에서의 내용조직은 ‘선 계통적 접근, 후 지역적 접근’으로 하되, 쟁점 중심으로 적절히 결합될 필요가 있다. 한편 지역적 접근에서는 세계의 지역구분에 과도하게 매몰되지 말고, 선정된 지역 하에 주제기반 사례학습이 이루어질 필요가 있음을 제안한다.

This study aims to critically investigate ‘World Geography’ subject which is taught as one of the elective subjects in Korea’s Secondary Education and to provide an alternative approach to world geography education in Korea. Currently, ‘Korean Geography’ and ‘World Geography’ are the two of elective subjects in Korean high schools. But, we raise a question about the dichotomy of geography subjects because geography subjects are required not only to meet the social needs in an era of globalization, but also to embrace huge volumes of geographical knowledge developed and accumulated as a result of modern geographical research. As a parent discipline of geography education, geography continues to put emphasis on the multi-scalar approach and the relational thinking through the relational turn. However, the subject dichotomy in geography education can be a great barrier to receive things mentioned above and therefore to strengthen the social usefulness of geography education. In sum, we propose that it is urgently necessary for geography education to introduce integrated non-scalar subject names in order to deal with various scales. Under these non-scale subject names, content organization should be the systemic approach in the first and the regional approach in the second. However, it is important to note that geographical issues should be properly combined with the two approaches. In addition to this, we suggest that the regional approach should be based on the case studies that typically show geographical issues about specific regions rather than based excessively on the regional divisions of the world.
