There is nothing like the bond you establish with fellow inmates on a hospital ward. In days gone by, it often came about by the mutual flouting of rules – patients would act as lookouts for each other when a sneaky fag or a slug of something forbidden and alcoholic was being enjoyed in the loo. ‘Hello nurse!’ they would bellow, looking rather shifty, and you knew someone was up to something.
