Abstract

[Complex Figure Drawing in the Elderly]

Two groups of normal subjects (30 subjects from 40 to 50 years and 35 subjects over 60 years of age) were asked to copy the complex figure of Rey. The assumptions were that the aged subjects would behave like right-brain-damaged subjects and thus a. execute the figure from right to left; b. draw the elements without apparent order; and c. reproduce a figure with distortions when compared with the model. The younger subjects were expected to a. execute the figure from left to right; b. begin the drawing with the main structures; and c. reproduce an accurate figure. The analysis of the drawings shows that only the third assumption is realized. Indeed, a. the aged subjects execute the figure from left to right like the younger subjects; b. the aged subjects segment the reproduction like the younger subjects and these latter do not begin with the main structures; c. but the aged subjects differ from the others in the accuracy and in the final organization of the figure.
