Abstract

[Seriation Training of Young Children with the Levinova Method]

The effects of seriation training, based on the Levinova method, were investigated. Subjects were 36 kindergarten children who were unable to solve any of the seriation tasks correctly on the pre-test. The 18 children in the training condition were trained each school day during a period of three and a half weeks. It was shown that this training method produced strong effects. Near-far transfer was observed, because the trained children were able to solve single and multiple seriation tasks derived from Piaget’s publications, as well as seriation tasks in which irrelevant cues were added to the stimulus material. Four months after the training the range of the near-far transfer effect decreased, because this effect was only observed on the seriation tasks derived from Piaget’s publications. However, two years after the training, the children in the control group showed almost the same level of performance on these tasks as the children in the training condition.
