Description
Slavery in Byzantine and Islamic Egypt (6th-10th Century). — Slavery in Byzantine Egypt was fuelled by internal reproduction and by an external contribution, especially Nubian. Slaves were used for domestic purposes, for handicrafts and agricultural work, although their number seems to have decreased after the 4th century. The Muslim conquest forced and amplified the external contributions without causing an enslavement of the local population. The changes appeared in the diversification of slave labour, from the master’s bed to the armed services, apart from administrative and heavy work.
