How to reach >90% Open Access
- 1. Lib4RI - Library for the Research Institutes within the ETH Domain: Eawag, Empa, PSI & WSL
Description
The importance of Open Access (OA) publishing is indisputable. At Lib4RI we focus on growing the OA share of research output published by members of Eawag, Empa, PSI & WSL. We present here the actions we undertook to support and facilitate OA publishing by researchers at the four research institutes. Besides offering support for gold/hybrid OA (agreements with publishers, OA fund), we concentrate on services making green OA easy and trouble-free for researchers.
DORA, the repository of Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL, was launched in 2016 and already registers more than 73000 publications, more than 98% of which include the full text. DORA enables researchers to increase their visibility through the green OA way.
The steps to reach >90% OA were:
- Support the four research institutes with the development of institutional OA policies
- Establish Read & Publish agreements with 11 publishers and a total of 9064 journals, and OA agreements with 3 publishers and a total of 519 journals
- Offer financial support for publishing in gold OA journals with the Lib4RI OA Fund
- Assisted Deposit Service: the Lib4RI team identifies closed access publications with potential for green OA, contacts authors and assists with the deposits of accepted version in DORA
- Open Access monitoring: easy access to data about OA at the four research institutes
- Expand our OA marketing, with pop-up libraries and group-specific presentations
As a result, 87% - 94% of all 2021 journal articles in DORA are - or will be soon (i.e. are under embargo) - OA, depending on the institute.
