Velocitermes aporeticus Mathews 1977, new combination

Description

Velocitermes aporeticus (Mathews 1977), new combination

Diversitermes aporeticus Mathews 1977: 184 –185, figs. 128–129.

Material examined. BRAZIL, Mato Grosso, Ribeirão Cascalheira (base camp of the Xavantina-Cachimbo Expedition), A.G.A Mathews, 2.xii.1967, holotype soldier (part of lot MZSP- 7398) and paratypes (MZSP- 7398, BMNH- 133977 and AMNH). Another 120 samples from several different localities, including new ones from the type locality.

Remarks. Mathews (1977) placed this species in Diversitermes based on its “niche (in rotten wood and old mounds of other species)”. However, this ecological delimitation is incorrect as both genera include species with diverse habits. All diagnostic morphological characters support its inclusion in Velocitermes: long legs and antennae, head of the major soldier constricted, and gut morphology.
