Sertularelloides cylindritheca Allman 1888

Description

Sertularelloides cylindritheca (Allman, 1888)

(Fig. 6 N–P)

Material examined. Stn. 1, 18.ii.2012, 13 m, M214: several infertile stems, 7–12 mm high (MHNG-INVE- 82940); 26.ii.2012, 10– 15 m, M261: a single sterile stem, 18 mm high (MHNG-INVE-82941); M265: several sterile stems, 11–22 mm high (MHNG-INVE-82942); M271: a single sterile stem, 20 mm high (MHNG-INVE- 82943).

Remarks. For the synonymy of this species, refer to Medel & Vervoort (1998). As noted by Kramp (1947, as Cnidoscyphus macrotheca sp. nov.), the hydrothecae are borne on a short, distal apophysis of the stem/branch internodes, and its cavity "is separated from that of the internodium by a strong chitinous septum, perforated by the coenosarc". This structure (Fig. 6 O), as well as the presence of short stem apophyses supporting sessile hydrothecae, justify the assignement of this species to the genus Sertularelloides Leloup, 1937.

Geographical distribution. Subtropical and tropical waters of eastern and western Atlantic (Medel & Vervoort 1998). The Caribbean records are summarized by Calder & Kirkendale (2005); to these, it should be added the present record from Martinique.
