Ixodes crenulatus Koch 1844

Description

59. Ixodes crenulatus Koch, 1844b.

A Palearctic species, all of whose parasitic stages are usually found on Carnivora: Canidae, Felidae and Mustelidae, Lagomorpha: Leporidae, and Rodentia: Muridae, but they have also been collected from Mammalia (several orders); nymphs and larvae have been recovered from Aves (several orders). Ixodes crenulatus is a very rare parasite of humans.

Note: Ixodes crenulatus has been confused with several species (Guglielmone and Nava, 2014). Teng and Jiang (1991) and Kolonin (2009) follow Filippova (1977) in considering Ixodes canisuga a synonym of Ixodes crenulatus. Černý (1969a) proposed that the name Ixodes crenulatus should be declared invalid, and Emel’yanova (1979, under the genus Pholeoixodes) suggested that this taxon represents a species complex, while Filippova and Panova (2000) described morphotypes of Ixodes crenulatus. Probably more than one species is represented under the name Ixodes crenulatus. Estrada-Peña et al. (2017) found no reliable characters for separating nymphs and larvae of Ixodes crenulatus from the same stages of morphologically similar species occurring in Europe and North Africa. See also Ixodes canisuga, Ixodes filippovae and Ixodes kaiseri for their confusion with Ixodes crenulatus.
