Coreopsis verticillata Linnaeus 1753

  • 1. Department of Botany, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London, UK

Description

Coreopsis verticillata Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 907. 1753.

"Habitat in Virginia." RCN: 6556.

Lectotype (Reveal & al. in Huntia 7: 218. 1987): Clayton 308 (BM-000040282).

Current name: Coreopsis verticillata L. (Asteraceae).

Note: Sherff (in Publ. Field Mus. Nat. Hist., Bot. Ser. 11: 401. 1936) suggested that Clayton material, if extant, would be the obvious type. Smith (in Sida 6: 177. 1976) indicated Clayton material seen by him at BM as the lectotype but failed to distinguish between three different collections (Clayton 308; 409; s.n.). In fact, Smith annotated the last of these sheets as lectotype, and this is the only one of the three that is not original material for the name. Reveal & al. subsequently designated Clayton 308 (BM) as lectotype.
