  • 1. Department of Botany, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London, UK

Description

Rhododendron maximum Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 392. 1753.

"Habitat in Virginia. Collinson." RCN: 3092.

Lectotype (Chamberlain in Cafferty & Jarvis in Taxon 51: 753. 2003 [2002]): [icon] " Chamaerhododendros lauri-folio semper virens, floribus bullatis corymbosis " in Catesby, Nat. Hist. Carolina 2, App.: 17, t. 17. 1747.

Current name: Rhododendron maximum L. (Ericaceae).

Note: Chamberlain (in Notes Roy. Bot. Gard. Edinburgh 39: 316. 1982) indicated unseen Collinson material as the type (based on Linnaeus’ "Habitat in Virginia. Collinson."), but as it was not possible to trace any such material, he subsequently designated Catesby’s illustration as the lectotype.
