Carineta doxiptera Walker 1858

Description

Carineta doxiptera Walker, 1858a new record

Carineta doxiptera Walker 1858a: 313. (Constancia, Province of Rio, Brazil)

REMARKS. This species is another of a group of Peruvian species that are of similar size and general morphology including C. dicrophryxothrix n. sp., C. dolosa, C. doxiptera, C. gemella, C. hamata, C. rumipataensis n. sp., C. socia, C. ventrilloni, and C. viridicata. This species can be distinguished from C. dicrophryxothrix n. sp., C. gemella, C. hamata, C. socia, and C. viridicata by the curved rather than straight posterior margin of the operculum in these species. Specimens of C. rumipataensis n. sp. can be distinguished by the finger-like medial extension to the operculum. The dark bronzing of the distal wings, the more acutely angled primary spine and the pygofer basal lobe appendage curving to the ipsilateral side and terminating in a V-shape distinguishes C. dolosa from C. doxiptera. Finally, C. ventrilloni can be distinguished primarily by the basal pygofer lobe appendage that terminates in two unequal length extensions and the posterior opercular margin forming almost a right angle to the lateral opercular margin.

DISTRIBUTION. The species has been reported previously from Brazil and French Guiana (Metcalf 1963c; Sanborn 2011a) with the range recently expanded to include Bolivia (Sanborn 2019b).
