그린햄커먼 여성평화캠프(Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp)는 1981년부터 2000년까지 영국 버크셔주 뉴베리(Newbury)의 영국 공군기지(RAF Airbase) 앞에서 지속된 여성 핵무장반대운동 캠프를 일컫는다. 평화캠프의 여성들은 수년 간 기지 사보타지 및 기지 둘러싸기, 펜스 절단과 기지 침범, 핵무기발사체 이동경로 폭로 등 적극적인 직접행동을 조직했다. 본 연구의 목적은 그린햄커먼에서 진행된 여성들의 투쟁을 ‘저항적 퍼포먼스’(protest performance)의 관점에서 역사적 의미를 분석하는 것이다.
그린햄커먼 평화캠프에서의 저항행동은 군사기지와 이에 맞서는 캠프활동이라는 공간성을 띤 갈등과 투쟁을 중심으로 지속되었다. 또한 캠프 일상의 구성, 기지 사보타지, 미디어 재현을 둘러싼 갈등, 섹슈얼리티, 캠프 철거 등은 모두 여성의 신체를 매개로 이뤄졌다. 캠프 활동가들은 군사기지 펜스와 캠프를 저항적 퍼포먼스가 이뤄지는 연극성(theatricality)을 띤 공연장이자 갤러리(gallery)로 활용하면서 대중 참여와 공동 실천의 장을 만들어 내었다. 이 여성들은 핵미사일이라는 보이지 않는 존재와 비밀리에 이뤄지는 군사작전을 대중들에게 알리고 인지시키기 위한 투쟁을 조직했으며 이는 군, 정부 당국의 작전수행 여지를 크게 축소시키기조차 했다.
이 과정에서 수만 명에 이르는 참여자들을 조직할 수 있었고 캠프를 지속 가능하게 하는 전국적인 지원 네트워크를 형성할 수 있었다. 평화캠프의 여성들은 미디어의 왜곡과 당국의 위협속에서도 창의적인 투쟁과 커뮤니케이션, 다수 대중의 참여를 기획함으로써 캠프를 지속할 수 있었다. 그 과정에서 여성들은 자신들이 무엇을 할 수 있는가를 자각하게 되었고 그녀들의 신체는 단지 나약하고 보호받아야 할 대상이 아님을 증명했다.

Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp refers to a women’s nuclear arms movement camp that lasted from 1981 to 2000 in front of the RAF Airbase in Newbury, Berkshire, England. Women in the peace camp have organized active direct actions over the years, including base sabotage, surrounding the base, cutting fences, invading the base and exposing the route of nuclear weapons launch vehicles. The purpose of this study is to analyze the historical significance of women’s struggles at Greenham Common from the perspective of ‘protest performance.’
Resistance behavior at the Greenham Common Peace Camp continued around the military bases and camp activities against them. In addition, the composition of daily camp life, base sabotage, conflict over media reproduction, sexuality, and camp demolition were all carried out through women’s bodies. Camp activists created a venue for public participation and joint practices by using the military base fence and camp as a theater and gallery with resistance performances. These women organized a struggle to inform the public of the invisible existence of nuclear missiles and secret military operations, which even reduced the room for military authorities to carry out operations.
In this process, tens of thousands of participants could be organized and a nationwide support network could be formed to make the camp sustainable. Women in the peace camp were able to continue the camp by planning creative struggles, communication, and participation of the majority of the public despite media distortions and threats from the authorities. In the process, women became aware of what they could do and proved that their bodies were not just weak and protected.
