Abstract

The Turkish Association of Pediatric Surgeons (TAPS) launched in 2007 a Basic Educational Activities (BEA) program with the aim to standardize and disseminate prespecialization training and emphasize basic principles of pediatric surgical training. Several courses including Newborn Surgery, Thoracic Surgical Diseases in Children, Abdominal and Colorectal Surgery, Pediatric Oncologic Surgery, Pediatric Urology, Advanced Life Support for Childhood Trauma and Basic Endoscopic Surgery have been done. A retrospective study was planned to evaluate the contribution of courses within the frame of BEA to pediatric surgical training within the last ten years.

A total of 41 courses have been organized within 10 years A web-based program accessible by trainees preceded the 2-day interactive courses. During 10 years 345 trainers and 634 trainees have participated in the educational program.

Having been successfully maintained for the last ten years TAPS-BEA is an excellent example of an educational program using standardized e-courses, visual and published materials with devotional contributions of our association’s executive committees, educational committees and our dear trainers, we think that BEA is providing significant contributions to the standardization and development of pediatric surgery in our country.
