모리스 쿠랑과 『한국서지』에 대한 인식과 연구의 통시적 접근

이 연구는 모리스 쿠랑(Maurice Courant, 1865～1935)의 『한국서지(Bibliographie Coréenne)』에 대한 초기 인식의 상황을 살펴보고 모리스 쿠랑과 『한국서지』에 대한 연구가 전개되어 가는 과정을 검토한 것이다. 1894년 모리스 쿠랑의 『한국서지』제1권이 간행된 이후 이 자료는 서구어로 된 참고도서가 충분하지 않았던 시기에 한국의 역사와 문화를 이해하는 주요한 정보원이 되어 왔다. 우리나라에서 『한국서지』가 처음 소개된 것은 1897년 The Korean Repository에 『한국서지』서문이 영어로 수록된 것이다. 이후 『한국서지』는 여러 저술에 소개되었으나 이들 자료가 포함하는 것은 『한국서지』서문에 한정되어 있었다. 『한국서지』가 발간된 이후 적어도 1945년까지 『한국서지』의 서문은 한국 문화사 전반에 대한 매우 의미있고 흥미로운 저작으로 간주되었다. 한국인에 의한 번역은 1946년 국어학자였던 김수경이 서문을 번역하여 간행한 것이다. 1994년에는 이희재가 『한국서지』의 서문을 비롯하여 본문에 해당하는 3,821종의 서지 내용을 번역하고 조사하여 『한국서지』(수정번역판)을 간행하였다. 또한 한국에서의 연구동향을 조사한 결과 수정번역판 간행을 기점으로 한국에서의 연구는 활성화되었고 다양한 전공의 연구자들이 모리스 쿠랑과 『한국서지』에 관련된 논문을 작성하였음을 확인하였다.

This study examines the early understandings of Bibliographie Coréenne by Maurice Courant (1865～1935) and analyses the progress of research on Maurice Courant and Bibliographie Coréenne. Since the publication of Bibliographie Coréenne by Maurice Courant in 1894, this book has become a major source of understanding of the history and culture of Korea in times when not enough Western-language reference books were available. Bibliographie Coréenne was first introduced in Korea in 1897 by The Korean Repository which included the preface of Bibliographie Coréenne. Since then Bibliographie Coréenne has been introduced in several writings, but the inclusion of these writings was limited to the preface of Bibliographie Coréenne. The preface of Bibliographie Coréenne at least until 1945, after the publication of Bibliographie Coréenne by Maurice Courant, was regarded as a very meaningful and interesting work on the whole of Korean cultural history.
The first translation by Koreans was done by Kim Su Kyung in 1946, who was a renowned Korean linguist. In 1994, Lee Hee Jae examined and translated the preface of Bibliographie Coréenne and 3,821 titles of bibliography corresponding to the text, and published Bibliographie Coréenne-revised translation.
With the examination of the research trends in Korea through bibliometrics, it was confirmed that researches in Korea were activated from the publication of the revised translations, and that researchers of various major fields had written papers related to Maurice Courant and Bibliographie Coréenne.
