ABSTRACT

Second Language Teacher Education as a field of study within teacher education is relatively small. The field is often subdivided into the teaching of English as a Second or Foreign Language and the teaching of other Modern Foreign Languages, but this chapter provides a generalist approach of relevance to the preparation of teachers for any type of instructed second, foreign or additional language learning classroom. Integrated models of teacher education offer a potential means to increase the professionalism and status of teachers, preparing them to be both consumers and creators of new knowledge about teaching and to develop adaptive expertise and problem-solving skills that enable career-long professional learning. Integrated models can help beginning L2 teachers to identify productive tensions between what is observed in classroom field experiences and what is suggested by educational research. Written assignments are important tools in the education of teachers with the aim of them developing a strong professional rationale for actions taken within the classroom.
