Abstract/Summary

CEOTRES is a project funded by the Regional Government of the Comunidad de Madrid that aims to explore ideas in the frontier of knowledge for the application of photovoltaics to the generation of solar fuels. In this framework, in this work we: a) describe a thermodynamic analysis that can assist to screen which solar fuel production could be economically feasible from basic principles as well as to estimate the minimum amount of energy required to capture CO2 from air; b) we review an electrochemical process, based mainly on the use of dehydrogenases and nicotine adenine dinucleotide, that could be used to convert CO2 into methanol and c) an electrochemical process suitable for capturing CO2 from ambient air.
