Abstract
Laboratory engineering tests on peat are a relatively recent development. Unlike mineral soils, which have an accepted quantitative classification system, peat soils have yet to be classified in an acceptable quantitative manner. A few basic index tests, however, have become the common denominator in describing samples of peat tested in the laboratory. These tests are water content, organic content, and specific gravity.
