This issue of JEP features the launch of a new feature that we hope will both enrich our readers’ experience and our own understanding of how to do the best digital publishing. With this issue, we introduce full support of Hypothes.is, an open platform for the collaborative evaluation of knowledge. It supports sentence-level critique and is a tool for community peer-review to provide commentary, references, and insight at the article level. Now, every article of JEP is open for commentary and discussion through annotation. Please explore the annotations and add your own. The authors, publishers, and Hypothes.is developers are all eager to see your contributions and to observe and participate in the many discussions we hope it will open up.

Using Hypothes.is with JEP

For pages that have annotation enabled, you’ll notice an overlayed annotation navigation bar on the right side of your browser window.

If an article has annotations (like this article), you’ll see a pointer with an annotation count along the navigation bar indicating the annotation’s position on the page. Hover over the pointer and the annotated portion of the text will become highlighted. Clicking the pointer will reveal the annotation(s).

While anyone can read the annotations and comments on JEP articles, in order to contribute your voice to the conversation, you’ll need create an account or sign-in. This also means that your annotations will be public and viewable to the world, even those that do not have Hypothes.is accounts or are signed-in.

Initially, we’d like to encourage those making annotations and comments on articles to use the tag “JEP”. Doing so will aggregate all JEP comments and allow us to easily track JEP’s usage of Hypothes.is.

Annotating an Article

Making an annotation is simple. Just click, hold, and highlight the portion of text you’d like to annotate, and release. You’ll see an annotation pen appear. Click the pen, and you can start making annotations.

We encourage our readers and authors to use this tool to share more information, question positions, elaborate on points, ask questions, and much more.

Commenting on an Entire Article

You can comment on an article as a whole by hovering over the speech bubble icon and select the “make a new comment” icon.

Highlighting

Readers can also highlight portions of text for their own reference. Simply select the highlighter icon after hovering over the Hypothes.is speech bubble icon. Selecting this tool will also highlight all of the other annotations you’ve made on the article.

Alpha Release

Keep in mind Hypothes.is is currently in alpha release. In other words, this is an early version of the application and we are one of the lucky, select user groups who get a first crack at Hypothes.is. The developers are actively adding features, so behavior of the application can and will change, and along the way you may encounter a bug. If you do, or have a general question or feedback for the Hypothes.is folks, please get in touch with them at support@hypothes.is or @hypothes_is.
