이 글에서는 농촌 공동체 현실문제에 관한 민속학계의 연구 동향과 성과를 검토하고 있다. 지난 세기 민속학은 농촌을 배경으로 민속과 전통에 관한 다양한 성과를 축적해 왔다. 주민의 삶과 문화적 역동성을 이해하는 데에 농촌 현실문제에 관한 관심이 핵심적인 부분임에도 불구하고 과거 민속학에서는 그것을 간과한 측면 역시 존재한다. 하지만 21세기를 기점으로 민속학계에서는 농촌 현실문제에 대한 중요성을 인식하고, 여기에 적극적으로 반응하는 모습이 나타나기 시작했다. 특히 ‘농촌관광’이나 ‘마을만들기’에 대한 다양한 사례 연구를 통해, 농촌 주민의 사회·문화적 실천에 관한 민속학적 관심이 본격화됨을 확인할 수 있다. 또한 ‘이주여성’, ‘다문화’, ‘노인문화’, ‘농촌 개발’, ‘대안 공동체’ 등 농촌 현실에 조응한 연구가 점차 증가하는 경향도 21세기 민속학의 한 특징이다.
이러한 연구를 통해 민속학은 민속이나 전통 그 자체에 관한 탐구를 넘어, 그것의 실천 주체나 맥락의 중요성을 재인식하기 시작했다. 또한, 농촌 현실문제에 관한 민속학 연구에서는 주민의 입장과 시선에 기반한 현지연구(fieldwork)를 강조하는 모습이 뚜렷하게 부각되기도 한다. 농촌 현실문제에 관한 민속학적 연구는 근대화나나 세계화 등으로 인한 농촌의 재구조화 과정에 대한 이해를 심화시키며, 주민의 삶과 문화적 역동성을 해명하는 데에 기여할 수 있다. 이는 향후 민속학의 지향 및 정체성과 관계된 부분으로 주목해야 할 것이다.

This study examines the research trends and achievements of the folklore community on the actual problems of rural communities. In the last century, folklore accumulated various achievements about folklore and tradition in rural areas. Although interest in the actual problems of rural areas is a key part of understanding the lives of the residents and cultural dynamics, there is also an aspect that it was overlooked previously in folklore. From the 21st century, however, the folklore community began to recognize the importance of actual problems found in rural areas and respond to them actively. Particularly, with a variety of case studies conducted on ‘rural tourism’ or ‘town making’, folklore interest in the social and cultural practice of rural residents began to be keener. Also, the gradual increase of research on the reality of rural areas involving ‘migrant women’, ‘multiculturalism’, ‘elderly culture’. ‘rural development’, or ‘alternative communities’ is one of the characteristics of folklore found in the 21st century.
Though the studies, folklore began to go beyond the exploration of folklore or tradition itself and recognize the importance of subjects practicing it or the context anew. Also, it is clear that folklore studies on the actual problems of rural areas emphasize fieldwork based n the position or native point of view.
Folklore research on the actual problems of rural communities can contribute to understanding profoundly the process of restructuring rural areas caused by modernization or globalization and also explaining the lives of the residents and also explaining the lives of the residents and cultural dynamics. This should be noted afterwards as a part related to the pursuit or identify of folklore.
