정신건강의학과(이하 정신과) 영역에서 주목해 보아야 할 윤리적 문제는 격리와 강박을 비롯한 강제 치료와 강제 입원, 환자의 비밀보장, 대리결정을 포함한 동의 문제 등 상당히 다양하다. 이번 글에서는 이 중에서도 강박(억제) 처치의 윤리적 정당성에 대해 검토해 보고자 한다. 강박(restraint)이란 환자의 신체적 활동을 제한하거나 구속하는 처치를 가리킨다. 물론 강박 처치는 정신과 영역에서만 활용되는 것은 아니다. 의식이 떨어져 있는 중환자실 환자를 관리하기 위한 목적에서부터 노인 환자의 안전이나 영양 섭취를 보장하기 위해서 강박 처치가 활용되곤 한다.
