Abstract

A recent study of the magneto-optic properties in fcc cobalt indicates that the polar Kerr activity in a photon energy range from 2 to 5 eV is much higher than that of the hcp phase. The samples used for this measurement were about 1,000 Å thick e-beam evaporated films grown on a Cu seeding layer. Structural analysis using grazing angle X-ray diffraction, TEM, XPS, AES, and RBS indicates that the films are single Crystal of high quality and there is no indication of interdiffusion between the layers. The present result provides the confidence in the data published for the magnetic and magneto-optic properties of the fcc Co phase.
