Formulation and Antibacterial Activity of Ceremai (Phyllathus acidus) Lozenges Using Three Different Binders

Author: SETYO NURWAINI, RATNA YULIANI, WARDATUL JANNAH, AWALIA SINAKA, DEVI UTAMI YULISTYANTI
Abstract: Ceremai (Phyllathus acidus) is a traditional medicinal plant used for treating canker sores (recurrent aphthous stomatitis). Staphylococcus aureus is one of the bacteria’s that mostly causes of canker sores. Lozenges is a suitable dosage form for recurrent aphthous stomatitis medicine. This study aims to determine influence of concentration of amylum manihot, gelatin, and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as binder on physical properties of lozenges of ceremai leaf extract, and determine antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Ceremai leaf was extracted by maceration using ethanol 70%. Lozenges were made by various concentrations of binders in four formulas each. Antibacterial activity of ceremai lozenges against Staphylococcus aureus was tested using diffusion method. Results showed that all formulas have good physical properties of lozenges. The increase of concentration of binder produced the higher hardness, the lower friability and the longer time of dissolution. Ceremai lozenges also inhibit potentially the growth of Staphylococcus aureus.
